Narrative

Cantwell is drawing fire from liberals in Washington for many of her votes during President Bush's first term, including her vote for the Iraq War Resolution and the confirmation of Condoleezza Rice. 2004 gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi, widely considered the strongest possible GOP candidate, has so far declined to run against Cantwell, making her re-election fairly likely despite her close victory in 2000. Cantwell's apparent unpopularity among Democrats and Washington's adoption of a run-off primary [1] could potentially complicate her chances. Republicans have found it difficult to find 'first-tier' candidates. Former insurance executive Mike McGavick (R) is taking the plunge. Businessman and veteran Mark Wilson (D) has announced a primary challenge to Cantwell, but withdrew in July. Cantwell won in '00 in a real squeaker. With the benefit of incumbency she should do better in '06. The FEC found that Cantwell illegally failed to disclose large loans to her campaign just prior to her '00 election and this may become an issue in '06. Currently, the Cantwell campaign is over $2 Million in debt.
